about us

We met over three year olds some 23 years ago and began a long friendship of volunteering. As we were sending those same three year olds off to junior high, we thought the time was right (or maybe just barely feasible) for us to pursue the idea of a shop.

This was the dawn of gardening as America's #1 hobby and we felt the hobbyists would be looking for quality tools and beautiful goods for entertaining. The Arbor opened in September 1991 selling garden goods and gifts. Over the years our product mix has expanded to include Simon Pearce glass, Le Jaquard Francais linens and hundreds of new lines every year. The whole store changes seasonally in a riot of color. Our year now includes trips to New York, Atlanta and Paris. And most important to us, our customers have become friends.

Now the three year olds are living in New York and Prague. We are still in business together (it's almost like a marriage) and we've opened a second shop on a beautiful street in Salem's historic district. Because there are so many requests for catalogs and a website from our out of town customers, we have chosen some of our very favorite items, wrapped in our signature style, to share with you.
